Avanza Pais (Go on Country) legislator Jose Williams Zapata has been elected as the new Congress Chairman for the 2022-2023 term.

Thus, he will be joined by lawmakers Martha Moyano as first deputy chairwoman, Digna Calle as second deputy chairwoman, and Alejandro Muñante as third deputy chairman.

Williams Zapata's List 5 obtained 67 votes, thus defeating Congressman Luis Aragon's List 3, which obtained 41 votes in the runoff.

"Consequently, Jose Daniel Williams Zapata has been elected to complete the 2022-2023 annual session; therefore, I proclaim him as such," Moyano said.

Members from different parties represented in Parliament, as well as the candidates who participated in the first round, extended congratulations to Williams.

Immediately afterwards, the new head of Congress took the oath of office.

Williams, a legislator for the region of Lima, is a retired Army general. He was the Head of the Joint Command of the Armed Forces and led the Chavin de Huantar operation, which ended the 1997 Japanese Embassy hostage crisis in Lima.

The new head of Parliament will replace Lady Camones, who was censured by Congress in a plenary session last Monday.
