The President of the Republic Pedro Castillo on Tuesday saluted Parliament's recently-elected Chairman Jose Williams Zapata and wished him success in his term as the new head of Congress.

"I hope that, in a democratic act, we agree to dialogue and work on the issues that urgently need to be solved in favor of all Peruvians," Mr. Castillo expressed via his official Twitter account.

"I invite you to meet so that together, both the Executive and Legislative Branches, we can give concrete solutions to the people's needs and, if possible, travel the country," he added.

Last Monday, Avanza Pais (Go on Country) legislator Jose Williams Zapata was elected as the new Congress Chairman for the 2022-2023 term.

Thus, he joins lawmakers Martha Moyano as First Deputy Chairwoman, Digna Calle as Second Deputy Chairwoman, and Alejandro Muñante as Third Deputy Chairman.

Williams Zapata's List 5 obtained 67 votes, thus defeating Congressman Luis Aragon's List 3, which obtained 41 votes in the runoff.

Williams, a legislator for the region of Lima, is a retired Army general. He was the Head of the Joint Command of the Armed Forces and led the Chavin de Huantar operation, which ended the 1997 Japanese Embassy hostage crisis in Lima.

The new head of Parliament will replace Lady Camones, who was censured by Congress in a plenary session.
