The President of the Republic Pedro Castillo on Tuesday morning inspected the operation of the desalination and wastewater treatment plant of the Provisur Project.

Said plant supplies drinking water to nearly 100,000 inhabitants in Lima's districts of Punta Hermosa, Punta Negra, San Bartolo, and Santa Maria del Mar.

The project, called Provision of Sanitation Services for the Southern Districts (Provisur), is Peru's first experience in seawater desalination as a source of drinking water supply.

The inspection of such plant, located in the district of Santa Maria del Mar, allows the Head of State to verify in situ the progress and operation of technologies used to desalinate seawater and provide drinking water.

The project investment exceeds S/320 million (around US$82.9 million) and involves the laying of 121 km of pipes for drinking water and another 120 km for sewage.

The Ministry of Housing, Construction, and Sanitation (MVCS), through the General Directorate of Programs and Projects, has been performing the process to set up three new desalination plants in the regions of Lambayeque, Piura, and Moquegua.
