The President of the Republic Martin Vizcarra on Monday announced that the Government of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland will be in charge of executing the Comprehensive Plan for Reconstruction with Changes in the regions affected by the 2017 Coastal El Niño Phenomenon.
As is known, said weather event was characterized by heavy rains, landslides, and floods, which destroyed infrastructure and crops, leaving many citizens homeless.
"The negotiation process has lasted 5 months and has continued during the emergency; the governments of the most advanced countries, in terms of infrastructure, have participated and were interested (in the project) since the beginning. We thank the participating countries, it was a difficult choice," he stated.
Works in Health and Education
The statesman mentioned that among the projects —to be developed— are
15 health establishments, such as hospitals located in
Piura, Lambayeque, La Libertad, Ancash, and Lima, among other regions.
Likewise, the Peruvian leader mentioned that —in the
education sector— efforts will be done to reconstruct 74 educational institutions located in Tumbes, Piura, La Libertad, Lambayeque, Ancash, Lima, Ica, and Huancavelica.
Pluvial drainage and integral treatment to rivers
Furthermore, the President announced that pluvial drainage systems will be implemented in the large northern cities to prevent —in the future— those areas from being affected by floods due to torrential rains, which damage not only public infrastructure, but also homes and the belongings of locals.
Moreover, the Head of State explained that these works will be carried out in the main northern cities: Tumbes, Chiclayo and Trujillo; in the case of Piura region, the works will be developed in the cities of Piura,
Sullana,
Paita, and
Talara.
Mr. Vizcarra also announced that there will be a comprehensive treatment of 17 rivers and streams to avoid future overflows due to flooding or activation of streams that have caused damage to crop fields, homes, streets, schools, and medical posts, among others.
"I am delighted that Peru has chosen the United Kingdom to develop this important program of rebuilding vital infrastructure. We are committed to working hand in hand with the Authority for Reconstruction With Changes to build hospitals and schools (...)," UK Ambassador to Peru Kate Harrisson wrote on Twitter.
