Peruvian President Martin Vizcarra on Friday met with European Union Election Observation Mission (EUEOM) officials at the Government Palace in Lima.

At the request of the Executive Branch, the EUEOM will verify that the 2020 extraordinary parliamentary elections —scheduled for January 26— are held freely and transparently, as well as rely on all the corresponding guarantees.

The EUEOM Chief Observer, Leopoldo Lopez, landed last Sunday in Peruvian territory joined by the EU Electoral Observation Mission's core team.

EU observers have arrived since December 17 last year to be deployed across all regions of the Inca country.

It must be noted that the European Union has deployed this mission in response to an invitation by Peruvian authorities.

The new 130 legislators will serve the remaining period of the 2016-2021 legislative tenure, following the dissolution of Congress.

24,799,384 Peruvian citizens are eligible to participate in the upcoming elections both in their home country and from abroad.
