Peru President: Government to stand firm in fight against terrorism

15:27 | Lima, Sep. 21.

President Martin Vizcarra on Friday affirmed his administration will not give up the fight against terrorism and will instead intensify actions aimed at entirely pacifying the Valley of the Apurimac, Ene, and Mantaro rivers (Vraem), the subversion's theater of operations.

On behalf of the nation, the Head of State expressed his support and gratitude to Armed Forces members who recently delivered a serious blow to Shining Path remnants in Vraem by shooting terrorist "Basilio" to death.

"This hard blow to terrorism is the outcome of a clear and firm political decision," the Peruvian leader indicated.

These actions are also aimed at bringing development and progress to the Vraem.

According to the top official, Armed Forces work constantly in order to guarantee the nation's sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity.

Likewise, he noted men and women in uniform have also mobilized when the Inca country was affected by severe natural disasters.

Within this framework, military institutions carry out social tasks as well. They assist citizens affected by cold spell and frosts, evacuate by air the citizens in medical need —who live in remote areas of the territory— and distribute micronutrients against anemia among the population.

"That's why today we recognize the strong social commitment and sensitivity shown by Peru's Armed Forces," the President said.

"Our military members have been right next to the most vulnerable people during the hardest times, and they deserve our gratitude," he added.

In this sense, the statesman indicated military members are not alone in the fight against terrorism and drug-trafficking, since it is a task for all Peruvians, starting with the President.

"In other words, the Armed Forces have stood next to us every time we have needed them," Vizcarra stressed.

"(…) It is time for the whole country to say 'we are in this together,'" he concluded.

Remarks were made during the Armed Forces Day ceremony held in Lima.
