Peru: Combating narco-terrorism in VRAEM requires everyone's support

10:43 | Arequipa (Arequipa region), Aug. 14.

Defense Minister Jose Huerta urged Peruvians to join Police and Armed Forces' daily efforts to eradicate terrorism and drug trafficking in the Valley of the Apurimac, Ene, and Mantaro rivers (VRAEM).

"We have to eradicate threats of terrorism and drug trafficking in VRAEM, and we will do it together. We want to spread the idea among the population, as joint efforts of Armed Forces and National Police need everyone's support," he stated.

Speaking from Arequipa City, Huerta emphasized that all Peruvian citizens should commit their efforts and "stop seeing threats from a balcony."

"We need to support our Armed Forces (…). We need moral support for soldiers who voluntarily join military forces knowing they put their own lives at risk," the official added.

His remarks were made at an award ceremony honoring Armed Forces and Police's war flags. The event was held within the framework of Arequipa City's 478th foundation anniversary celebrations.

New Roles

The minister also noted that Armed Forces have adapted efficiently to their new roles in changing times besides securing the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the Andean country.

Moreover, he highlighted their recent humanitarian aid transport and distribution actions to support citizens affected by frost and friaje (cold spell) across the country.
