Peru President: Executive Branch to approve political reform bills today

10:02 | Lima, Aug. 8.

Peruvian President Martin Vizcarra on Wednesday announced that three political reform bills will be approved by the Council of Ministers in order to be submitted to Congress for their review.

According to the Head of State, these initiatives will be consulted with the population through a referendum

The National Council of the Magistracy (CNM) —which appoints judges and attorneys— is badly structured, and there is no guarantee of an adequate election process, he added.

"For this reason, we want citizens' opinion on these deep structural reforms in the judicial and political spheres. The population has the right to voice whether they agree with the judicial system and the political one," he affirmed.

The Peruvian leader said he will not comment on the audio recordings mentioning his name.

As is known, a series of audio clips came to light exposing alleged corruption in the judicial system.

"I didn't make any arrangements with these people, who are where they should be: in jail," he assured.

Likewise, the Executive Branch will respect the decision made by the Third Preparatory Investigation Court, which rejected former President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski's request to leave the country claiming medical purposes.

Remarks were made as Vizcarra opened expansion works as part of drinking water projects in Lima's Ate district.
