Peru President asks election board to shorten deadlines for installation of Congress

18:15 | Huancavelica (Huancavelica region), Feb. 11.

Peruvian President Martin Vizcarra on Tuesday requested the National Election Board (JNE) to shorten the deadlines —following the January 26 extraordinary parliamentary elections— for the prompt installation and functioning of the new Congress of the Republic.

"We respectfully ask the National Election Board to shorten the deadlines. We need the (new) Congress members to assume duties quickly, in the shortest time possible," he expressed.

According to the Head of State, the recent electoral process served to complete one cycle, and now it is appropriate to start a new one with the next Parliament.

The top official recalled that his administration has always worked making decisions that benefit Peruvian citizens. In this sense, he mentioned the mandatory sale of generic medications at pharmacies, health care universalization, and education-related affairs.

"We have the people's support," he stated.

The new 130 legislators will serve the remaining period of the 2016-2021 legislative tenure, following the dissolution of Congress.
