Peru President: 5 million households to receive universal bonus this May

15:56 | Lima, May. 8.

The President of the Republic Martin Vizcarra on Friday said the Government's commitment is that in May each of 5 million households receives the Universal Family Bonus —equivalent to S/760 (about US$223)— so that all of them can meet their basic needs during the period of compulsory social isolation, which was recently extended thru May 24.

"This is a commitment at the national level. This month, we must transfer the bonus to 5 million families who are going to receive (each) the S/760 (about US$223) to cope with the entire quarantine," he expressed.

In this sense, the Head of State affirmed that a total of 6.8 million families will have access to this bonus. Of that amount, some 5 million will receive this benefit in the current month. Thus, hours of operation at financial institutions will even be extended.

In this sense, the top official pointed out that he is already making arrangements with the ministers of the Economy-Finance, Labor, and Development-Social Inclusion to achieve the goal.

"This May is key for the delivery of the universal bonus (...). We are going to deliver it at the urban and rural levels," he stressed.

Initially set to last from March 16 to 30, the social isolation had been first extended to April 12, then thru April 26, followed by May 10, and recently until Sunday May 24.

On this occasion, the President was joined by members of the Council of Ministers. The event was held at the Government Palace in Lima.

Friday marks the fifty-fourth day of mandatory social isolation.
