Peru: Banks and shopping centers will extend opening hours to reduce crowds

15:01 | Lima, May. 8.

Peruvian President Martin Vizcarra on Friday announced that banks and shopping centers will extend their opening hours starting Monday in order to reduce crowds amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to the Head of State, bank branches will operate until 4 p.m. or 5 p.m. starting Monday next week, depending on each bank, while shopping centers will be open until 5 p.m. or 6 p.m.

To date, curfew is effective as of 6:00 p.m. in most regions, with the exception of Loreto, Tumbes, Piura, Lambayeque and La Libertad, where it starts at 4:00 p.m. Immobilization hours will not vary in these areas.

"The aim is to avoid crowds at the bank branches in which 5 million households will pick up their bonus money," he explained.

Arrangements are being discussed with banking entities so as to improve social distancing inside their branches and avoid crowds of people.

Remarks were made in a televised press conference within the framework of a mandatory social isolation imposed to prevent the COVID-19 from further spreading in the South American country.

On this occasion, the President was joined by members of the Council of Ministers. The event was held at the Government Palace in Lima.

Friday marks the fifty-fourth day of mandatory social isolation.
