Peru PM: Gov't is clearly committed to dialogue

Peruvian Prime Minister Salvador del Solar has affirmed the government is clearly committed to dialoguing about the Tia Maria mining project and advocated to find a space for understanding in order to clear the doubts regarding this matter.

In this sense, the high-ranking official reiterated the Executive Branch is willing to talk, without any impositions.

"We are not a government that imposes things; we are a government that listens and dialogues, that takes things into consideration, and we maintain this stance," he expressed.

Likewise, Del Solar indicated that diverse sectors' concerns and doubts regarding the Tia Maria mining project and their right to peacefully express them are valid.

Thus, the next step should be to begin talks with the representatives of Arequipa region's Islay Province, where the project is expected to be developed.

According to the Prime Minister, the government maintains its firm willingness to listen to all parties involved and work with the region's authorities for the comprehensive development of the mining project's influence areas.

Furthermore, Del Solar indicated Southern Peru Copper Corporation obtained the construction permit as it complied with all administrative procedures.

However, the official pointed out the mining company has promised not to begin construction, unless there is a favorable environment.

Executive Branch spokespersons warned that —even though the license has been issued— this does not mean the company can start operations. It needs to earn —through dialogue— a social license first.

As is known, Peruvian President Martin Vizcarra on Wednesday expressed his administration's willingness for dialogue to resolve differences over the Tia Maria mining project.

"We are willing to do so, as always," he said in brief statements to the press at the Government Palace.
