Peru: Observers provide guarantees of transparency in electoral process

09:14 | Lima, Jan. 21.

National Election Board (JNE) Chairman Victor Ticona affirmed that the presence of international observers provides guarantees of transparency and unquestionability in the 2020 Extraordinary Parliamentary Elections scheduled for January 26.

During a meeting with European Union Election Observation Mission (EUEOM) Chief Observer Leopoldo Lopez and members of such delegation, Ticona noted that the work undertaken by these experts in Peru is quite valuable, as they take part in the entire process, including the voting, the counting of the votes, and the election results.

The JNE head provided the mission with an overview on the current electoral situation and the actions taken by the body, so that elections can be completed with full transparency, security, and guarantees of respect for the popular will.

Thus, Ticona explained the principal aspects and stages of the electoral process, as well as the jurisdictional, audit, regulatory, civic-educational, and administrative role of JNE.

In this sense, he highlighted the realization of electoral debates —organized by the institution in Lima and provinces— so as to promote an informed and responsible vote among electors.

The electoral authority stressed the permanent meetings held by the electoral system bodies (JNE, ONPE, and RENIEC) in order to plan, coordinate and finalize details for the realization of elections.

He recalled that —given the extraordinary nature of these elections— the tight deadlines had to be adapted to the electoral timeline approved by JNE, which is being followed diligently.

For his part, the EUEOM chief observer confirmed that the first group of 50 observers has been deployed across the country, and that the number of observers will increase as the election day approaches.
