2020 elections: EU observers meet in Lima to define areas of observation

19:10 | Lima, Jan. 2.

The European Union Election Observation Mission (EUEOM) held a technical meeting in Lima to define the areas of observation for the extraordinary parliamentary elections scheduled for January 26, 2020.

The observers met with representatives of the National Office of Electoral Processes (ONPE) branches in Amazonas, La Libertad, Lambayeque, Cajamarca, Lima Norte, Huancavelica, Iquitos, and Tumbes regions.

As is known, EU Ambassador to Peru Diego Mellado affirmed that the observation mission will be deployed across all regions of the South American country with the aim of monitoring the conduct of the electoral process.

He said the first group of observers have arrived since the end of last year. They will work in the long term until the voting day, while the second group —composed of European politicians and observers— will arrive on election day to conduct a short-term monitoring.

As is known, the Executive Branch constitutionally dissolved Congress on September 30 and called for parliamentary elections to be held on January 26, 2020.

24,799,384 Peruvian citizens are eligible to participate in the upcoming elections both in their home country and from abroad.
