Peru: Machu Picchu railway services suspended after train crash

17:23 | Cusco (Cusco region), Jul. 31.

At least 14 train services have been suspended after two trains crashed near the ancient Incan citadel of Machu Picchu Tuesday morning.

PeruRail railroad operator announced the measure will remain in force until the completion of post-accident procedures.

The railway company is waiting for the police and Public Ministry to release the official statement on the incident.

Likewise, PeruRail says railway services will not resume until the damaged trains are towed from the collision area.

On the other hand, it called on national and foreign tourists to be understanding and affirmed legal aspects will be finalized in a few hours.

As is known, two trains crashed on Tuesday morning near the famed ruins of Machu Picchu, leaving at least five people wounded.

As stated by one of the passengers, one of the trains had stopped on 82 km of the railroad to Machu Picchu because of a protest by domestic tourists, who blocked the railway track.

The collision happened a few minutes after the unit resumed its journey —once the protest was cleared— when another train hit it from behind on 88 km of the railroad.
