Peru: Inti Raymi festival shines in Huanuco

14:20 | La Union (Huanuco region), Aug. 1.

The Inti Raymi or Sun Festival is the most important traditional festivity in the Peruvian Andes; although Cusco city is known as the epicenter of this celebration, it also has been taking place with great solemnity in Huanuco region's La Union district for over 20 years.

In this sense, Huanuco Pampa archaeological complex —located 146 kilometers west of Huanuco city— was the venue chosen to host the Inti Raymi re-enactment.

As is known, Cusco celebrates this festival on June 24. However, the amazing ritual is also held in Huanuco every July 27 since 1997.

This cultural manifestation pays tribute to Inti (Sun God) in order to thank and ask him for a new crop year full of prosperity.

On this occasion, the event brought together delegations from Puno, Moquegua, and Tingo Maria, among other regions.

They represented each of the Inca Empire's regions: Antisuyo (East), Contisuyo (West), Qollasuyo (South), and Chinchaysuyo (North).

The spectacular show featured over 200 artists and included traditional dances from the Andean region.

Dos de Mayo Province Mayor Simeon Vasquez highlighted the joint efforts undertaken by entities that participated in the Inti Raymi.

In this regard, he thanked Huanuco Region Foreign Trade and Tourism Department for promoting the event nationwide.
