Peruvian Foreign Affairs Minister Nestor Popolizio affirmed the international community should impose sanctions on the
in order to open the way for a democratic transition.
According to the high-ranking official, holding new elections in the Bolivarian country to elect a new Head of State is the correct course of action.
"Now, the
Venezuelan population should recover democracy. Citizens have taken the streets in large numbers to support
Guaido (…). The fundamental freedoms of the Venezuelan population must be respected," he told Canal N local news channel.
"Right now, this looks a bit vague, but little by little this process will become more concrete under the internal pressure from the Venezuelan population and the pressure from the international community," Minister Popolizio expressed.
Likewise, the official indicated economic sanctions should be imposed on Maduro's regime in order to freeze the funds his high-ranking officials have around the world.
"Then, little by little, he will be isolated, without resources, and it will enable the process of
democratic transition," Popolizio added.
