Peru: Ex-President Garcia's asylum denial strengthens fight against corruption

18:02 | Puno (Puno region), Dec. 4.

Peruvian President Martin Vizcarra affirmed that the Uruguayan Government's decision to reject ex-President Alan Garcia's asylum request and separation of powers in Peru strengthens democracy, as well as the fight against corruption led by his administration.

Speaking from Puno region, in southeastern Peru, the Head of State noted Uruguay's confirmation that there is no political persecution and government branches work independently in the Inca country.

"This is absolutely clear. Plus, it enhances not only democracy and separation of powers, but the fight against corruption, which is one of the Government's principal objectives," he told the media.

According to Vizcarra, Peru recognizes and appreciates President Tabare Vazquez's decision to deny Garcia's asylum request, noting it strengthens democracy.

"No one says there is no democracy here in Peru, but this view —very common among Peruvians— has been reiterated by the friendly Government of Uruguay, which claims the three branches of government are autonomous," he commented.

As for the possibility of a future asylum request by Alan Garcia, he said the ex-Head of State is free to do what he thinks is right.

"The Government's stance to respect all citizens without giving up the fight against corruption has been clearly defined," he concluded.
