PM Villanueva: Uruguay confirms full democracy in Peru

10:52 | Lima, Dec. 3.

Peru's Prime Minister Cesar Villanueva remarked that Uruguayan Government's decision to reject an asylum request by ex-President Alan Garcia confirms the Inca country's commitment to rule of law, full democracy, and respect for institutions.

He said the Executive Power recognizes the decision made by Uruguayan President Tabare Vazquez on the situation of Garcia.

The Government official recalled that Peru had sent relevant information on the case —to Uruguay— which received a positive feedback from Tabare Vazquez.

"And, on that basis, he ratified that there is rule of law, full democracy, and respect for institutions —in general— in the case of Peru. This fully confirms our assertion that there is no political persecution," he told Canal N local news channel.

According to the Cabinet chief, justice sector-related actions are taken only by the Public Ministry and the Judicial Branch.

"The justice sector has responsibility for it. They will know what path to follow," he added.
