Peru President: Do not confuse anti-corruption fight with political persecution

13:42 | Santiago (Chile), Nov. 27.

President Martin Vizcarra on Tuesday affirmed former presidents' and the opposition party leader's legal situation not only impacts Peruvian society and the international community as it also affects the country's image.

"Unfortunately, the last five ex-presidents of Peru and leader of the political party with the highest representation at Congress are imprisoned, under investigation, or evading justice (…)," the statesman told Chile's El Mercurio newspaper.

These cases test institutions' capacity and democracy —at the same time— in order to determine who is guilty and judge those responsible within the framework of due process.

Likewise, President Vizcarra reiterated the Inca nation is a democratic country —relying on the rule of law and separation of powers— in which justice administration institutions have full authority to fulfill their functions.

Furthermore, the top official indicated corruption is a problem with international reach that requires a joint response to enable more effective actions against this scourge
