Peru President: A serious blow has been dealt to drug trafficking

18:04 | Chancay (Lima region), May. 30.

A serious blow has been dealt to drug trafficking thanks to the seizure of 1.15 tons of cocaine in Lima region's Chancay city, President Martin Vizcarra affirmed Wednesday.

This amount of drug was intended to be shipped to Spain, where it can cost approximately US$45 million.

"It is a heavy blow, but that is not enough. The work must be continuous, permanent, and persevering to succeed in eradicating this type of crimes," he told reporters.

In this regard, President Vizcarra noted his administration will continue fighting drug trafficking.

According to the Peruvian leader, first police reports said the drug would have come from the Valley of the Apurimac, Ene, and Mantaro rivers (Vraem).

In this sense, he said it is important not only to eradicate the hectares of illegal crops but also to combat the cocaine supply chain.

"I congratulate the National Police and the Public Ministry, and I ask you to continue these efforts (…)," the statesman expressed.

While in Chancay, President Vizcarra was joined by Interior Minister Mauro Medina and National Anti-Drug Agency (Dirandro) Head Hector Loayza.
