Peru: Attorney General pledges frontal fight against corruption

13:37 | Lima, Jan. 9.

Brand-new Attorney General Zoraida Avalos on Wednesday promised a frontal fight against corruption, while denying any party affiliation or that her post is compromised.

Avalos' 38 years of service at the Public Ministry and her impeccable service record endorse her commitment to combating this scourge.

As part of this pledge, she will back all cases related to the fight against corruption, without distinction.

As for the questioning over her vote in favor of appointing Carlos Ramos as Attorney General —in the past— Avalos denied that such support had implied a blank check.

Likewise, the official said that —as internal control prosecutor— she ruled against the request by the then-Public Ministry's head.

"I've never backed illegal acts by Dr. Ramos," she said, referring to the former Attorney General dismissed over corruption allegations back in 2015.

Additionally, she confirmed her objection against Pedro Chavarry's swearing-in as Attorney General after the release of an audio recording involving him and dismissed Supreme Judge Cesar Hinostroza.

As is known, Hinostroza is accused of leading a criminal organization known as "The Port's White Collars." He fled Peru in October 2018 but was later arrested in Madrid (Spain).

According to Avalos, she decided not to participate in activities led by the Public Ministry during Chavarry's time in office, due to a lack of support.

Supreme Prosecutor Zoraida Avalos on Tuesday assumed the post of Peru's interim Attorney General to replace resigning Pedro Chavarry.
