Peruvian Foreign Affairs Minister Mario Lopez held a phone conversation with Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi, in which they discussed the main topics on the bilateral agenda —namely cooperation to face the COVID-19 pandemic.

During the dialogue, Ambassador Lopez thanked the support received from China throughout the current health emergency.

Likewise, the Cabinet member highlighted the clinical trials that Sinopharm has been conducting in Peru for the development of a vaccine against COVID-19, and congratulated the inclusion of China into the COVAX Facility initiative.

Both authorities also agreed on the excellent level of the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries. Likewise, they pledged to continue strengthening the bilateral relationship in the political, economic, cultural, and cooperation-related spheres.

In 2019, Peru joined the Belt and Road Project —China's most ambitious initiative to boost trade and infrastructure cooperation with other countries.

Since 2014, China has been Peru's main trading partner, and in 2018 there was a historical record worth over US$23 billion in bilateral trade.
