Peru: 71-year-old mother joins the 72,319 citizens who beat COVID-19

14:55 | Lima, Jun. 3.

Mrs. Juana —a Peruvian citizen aged 71 who has 5 grown-up children— recently managed to recover and win her battle against COVID-19.

She was discharged from Lima Metropolitan Area's Ate Vitarte Emergency Hospital, after being hospitalized for 18 days. Thus, she has joined the 72,319 citizens who have recovered from this condition and must now stay at home, the Ministry of Health (Minsa) reported on Wednesday.

Today, this senior citizen is stable at home in the Santa Clara neighborhood —also in Ate district. Mrs. Juana recalled that she entered the hospital's triage area on April 28, after presenting symptoms of fatigue, fever, and respiratory failure.

There, she received oxygen through a reservoir mask. Over the days, she made progress and was discharged.

"I am happy to see my children again, I am very grateful to all doctors and nurses. They have been very good because they took care of me when I needed it most. I would like no one to go through what I went through," she expressed.

For her part, Dr. Camile Rodriguez —a medical specialist in emergencies and disasters at the hospital— highlighted that the hospitalization area fights for the recovery of each patient from the first minute.

"We always wait for a correct response to the first attempt because suffering from this disease makes it hard for them. We know that, but seeing them leave for their homes is worth every applause and tears shed," she said.

Lastly, Juana requested all Peruvians to have a lot of strength, optimism, and faith in God. "My faith helped me get ahead," she concluded.
