She did it! Oldest COVID-19 patient in Peru recovers

00:00 | Trujillo (La Libertad Region), Apr. 20.

After being hospitalized for eight days, including five in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at San Pablo Clinic in the northern city of Trujillo, Maria Morales defeated COVID-19 and has been discharged to become the longest-standing patient in Peru to recover from this disease at age 97.

This medical breakthrough was made possible thanks to concerted efforts of the COVID-19 Operations Command team in La Libertad, which has managed to integrate the health system to combat this pandemic.

According to Elias Cabanillas —an internist-intensivist who treated the patient— Morales had been admitted to the health center on April 13 with a diagnosis of severe respiratory failure, fever, encephalopathy (brain malfunction) and cough.

The case required immediate attention and admission to the ICU, where the diagnosis of atypical pneumonia due to the novel coronavirus was confirmed.

Morales' daughter was happy for the good health of her mother and thanked the efforts of each of the specialists, who are determined to take care of each of their patients.

"I am very grateful and fortunate to have my mother with us. It is incredible to see her leave the hospital," Delia Bardales Morales expressed thankfully.

The 97-year-old woman was born in 1923 and was a patient without pathological background.

The San Pablo Group has been treating 7.5% of those hospitalized and 16% of ICU patients nationwide. With 57 discharged citizens —who managed to beat the virus— the medical group is filled with hope to continue fighting the pandemic.
