on Monday said that a political truce, as well as inclusive, open, frank and respectful institutional dialogue between all Peruvians and their institutions, are the right path towards solving the crisis of governance affecting the country.
The call was made two days before the Congress plenary session scheduled for Wednesday in order to discuss the third impeachment motion against the President of the Republic Pedro Castillo.
"A political truce political, as well as inclusive, open, frank and respectful institutional dialogue between Peruvians and their institutions, are the right path for the good of the country and its citizens," Almagro wrote on Twitter.
His post was in response to a tweet by President Castillo a few days ago, in which he reiterated his commitment to democracy, and denied that his government was considering a Congress shutdown.
"At a difficult time for the country, with a crisis due to the fifth wave of the pandemic, I ratify my commitment to democracy, the rule of law and the Constitution, and I categorically reject that my government is plotting a shutdown of Congress to avoid an impeachment proceeding," Mr. Castillo stated.
The OAS special mission, which was made up of foreign affairs ministers from various countries and held almost 30 meetings during its visit to Peru, asked the country's Constitutional Court to act if an impasse arises between the State branches.
