OAS Permanent Council Chair announces high-level group to analyze situation in Peru

The Organization of American States (OAS) recently adopted a resolution on "Support for the preservation of democratic institutions and representative democracy in Peru."

OAS Permanent Council Chairman and Permanent Representative of Suriname to the institution, Ambassador Marten Schalkwijk, on Friday announced the composition of the high-level group that will analyze the situation in Peru —in follow-up to the resolution approved by the body at its special session held on October 20.

The composition of the group was decided after consultations by the Chairman.

The dates and the agenda of the high-level group in its visit to Peru will be defined at a later date.

The group will be composed of:

• Mr. Santiago Cafiero, Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Trade, and Worship of Argentina.

• Mr. Eamon Courtenay, Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Trade, and Immigration of Belize.

• Mr. Juan Carlos Holguin, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Human Mobility of Ecuador.

• Mr. Mario Bucaro, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Guatemala.

• Mr. Julio Cesar Arriola, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Paraguay.

• Ms. Laura Gil, Deputy Minister of Multilateral Affairs of Colombia.

• Mr. Christian Guillermet, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Costa Rica.

• Mr. Eladio Loizaga, former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Paraguay (Representative of the OAS General Secretariat).

The high-level group responds to the provisions of resolution CP/RES. 1208 (2400/22). In its resolutive paragraph number 4, the document resolves "to designate a high-level group made up of representatives of the Member States, in accordance with the Inter-American Democratic Charter, to carry out a visit to Peru in order to analyze the situation of which it will inform this Council."

The special session of the Permanent Council was convened at the request of the Government of Peru, and the resolution was approved by acclamation.
