Lima 2019: Peru expects to welcome over 100,000 tourists

00:03 | Lima, Jul. 4.

The Lima 2019 Pan American and Parapan American Games are getting closer and have a positive impact not only on the country's sporting endeavors but on the national economy —mainly in the tourism sector.

According to Foreign Trade and Tourism Minister Edgar Vasquez, more than 100,000 tourists are expected to visit Peru as part of this major sporting event, which will have a positive impact on the economy.

"Besides, the Games —described as the second biggest sporting event in the world after the Olympics— will have a significant impact on media coverage as it will be broadcast in almost all parts of the world," he told Andina news agency.

In this sense, Vasquez said Peru is prepared to accept the challenge and has sufficient hotel capacity to accommodate the incoming tourists.

"Over the past years, we have attracted investments worth nearly US$540 million, which resulted in expanded hotel infrastructure in the country," the government official underscored.

Vasquez asserted he has participated in various hotel openings and that additional ones are scheduled to occur in the remainder of the year, thus increasing the presence of large hotel chains in the country.

Peru House

Two Casa Peru (Peru House) exhibition halls will be erected for the Pan American and Parapan American Games. They are intended to promote the best of the country's production and cultures.

One will be located at the Athletes' Village and the other at the Culture Ministry headquarters, along with the International Press Center.

"This constitutes an ideal opportunity to showcase all Peruvian attractions, as well as to promote our gastronomy, cultural expressions, and flagship products, including pisco," the minister highlighted.
