The Judiciary on Sunday evening issued an 18-month ban on leaving the country for former president Pedro Pablo Kuczynski in connection with a money laundering investigation.

Judge Margarita Salcedo Guevara of the Fourth Preliminary Investigation Chamber of the National Superior Court based her decision on the latent risk of flight due to the seriousness of the alleged acts under investigation and the severe penalties set out for the alleged offenses.

The magistrate also pointed out that, as it is a complex investigation requiring time, there is a risk that the person under investigation might leave the country to avoid the completion of the ordered proceedings.

Representing the defense, lawyer Julio Midolo stated that the former president was not present at the virtual hearing because he was on medical leave.

This hearing was initially scheduled for Monday. However, the Public Ministry requested it be brought forward to Sunday because Pedro Pablo Kuczynski had attempted to travel to the United States but was prevented from doing so due to an active migration alert.
