Get to know COVID-19 measures announced by Peru on day 26 of emergency response

President Martin Vizcarra announced the new measures adopted by Peru as part of the state of national emergency declared in response to the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19) in the South American country.

Below is a list of the main announcements made from northern Tumbes region on day 26 of the emergency response:

1. So far, Peru has 5,897 positive cases —out of a total of 56,681 samples taken. 687 of the confirmed cases involve hospitalized patients, of whom 130 are connected to mechanical ventilation at Intensive Care Units. Other 1,569 have been discharged.


3. Mandatory social immobilization (curfew) in Peru will run from 6 p.m. to 4 a.m. during the two-week extension of the state of national emergency. The aim is to use this additional window of time to extend the opening hours for markets, food supply centers, pharmacies, and banks. In the case of Tumbes, Piura, Lambayeque, La Libertad, and Loreto —regions located in northern Peru— social immobilization will last from 4:00 p.m. to 4 a.m. 

4. Around 9,000 samples a day have been conducted to diagnose COVID-19 over the past four days. The figure is above the South American average. The number of samples taken is expected to increase to 12,000 next week.


6. Likewise, it was stipulated that people will have the option to spread their water bill payments over a period of up to 24 months.

7. The Armed Forces brought equipment and machinery to the Ecuador-Peru border region in order to monitor 23 crossing points between the two countries. The Head of State noted that the 
closure of borders is an important measure to combat the spread of the virus.
