The National Election Board (JNE) on Thursday received the
members of the European Union Election Observation Mission (EUEOM) and informed them of the current situation in the process of the extraordinary parliamentary elections scheduled for January 26, 2020.
During the meeting,
EUEOM Deputy Chief Observer Manuel Sanchez de Nogues told the Supreme Electoral Court that the 50 EU observers —who are to arrive— will be deployed throughout the country starting Monday.
These long-term observers will be deployed in teams of two in each of the country's 25 regions.
Likewise, Sanchez remarked that eight
members of the European Parliament will arrive in the week before the elections to join the mission, which will be joined by observers from European embassies based in Peru, meaning the delegation will comprise more than 100 members.
Sanchez asked the JNE plenary session for facilities to participate in the coordination meetings held by electoral system bodies and other activities undertaken as part of the process.
For his part,
JNE Chairman Victor Ticona welcomed the arrival of international observers, saying their presence will ensure transparency and unquestionability of the process.
He also stressed that the elections timetable has been carefully met, despite the tight deadlines due to the nature of the electoral process.
