50 EU Election Observation Mission members to arrive in Peru this week

13:37 | Lima, Dec. 23.

Some 50 observers from the European Union (EU) will arrive in the Peruvian capital city of Lima on December 26 to be deployed across all regions of the South American country for the extraordinary parliamentary elections scheduled for January 26, 2020.

Last weekend, the observer team completed the details of the deployment plan to be developed in Peru.

Besides, eight analysts —who make up the central EU Election Observation Mission— are already in the South American country.

The EU reported it sends this mission in response to the invitation made by Peruvian authorities.

This first group is composed of long-term observers, who will follow up on the rallies, talk to authorities, and candidates, among other actions. They are European citizens with experience in electoral processes.

To this first group will be added another one that will arrive a week before the congressional elections, together with 10 or 12 European parliamentarians.

"We must be neutral, impartial: the objective is not to oversee the act, but to report what has not worked well, what has worked, and provide recommendations," EU Ambassador to Peru Diego Mellado stated.

The mission will present its report at the end of the electoral process.
