Former U.S. President Bill Clinton visited this week an eye clinic in Lima, Peru, founded by Wilkes-Barre eye surgeon Dr. Frank A. Bucci Jr.

Dr. Bucci's Eye Institute of the Sacred Heart received a $5 million grant from two charities: the Clinton-Giustra Sustainable Growth Initiative and the foundation of Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim.

The money will help fund 50,000 cataract surgeries in Peru, according to an article at citizensvoice.com.

Dr. Bucci established the clinic in 2008, and he and his team of surgeons spend a week each quarter doing marathon cataract surgeries at no charge.

While simple to cure, cataracts remain a leading cause of blindness in developing countries.
