The Tumbes region experienced heavy rainfall over the last 24 hours, leading to significant water accumulation in various parts of the region, as in Zarumilla, which recorded a total of 99.3 liters of water per square meter due to the intense downpours, according to the National Service of Meteorology and Hydrology (Senamhi).

This  heavy precipitation occurred between midnight on Monday, October 26, and 6:00 a.m. on Tuesday, October 27.

The scientific agency added that other weather stations in Tumbes also recorded significant rainfall totals: 58.4 mm/day in Papayal, 53.4 mm/day in Puerto Pizarro, 45.7 mm at Puente Tumbes, and 39.1 mm at Campamento Sede.

Senamhi stated that these figures reflect the intensity of the rainfall recorded across different sectors of the department. One millimeter of rain is equivalent to one liter of water per square meter.

More rain expected in Tumbes and Piura

Senamhi has warned that precipitation will continue along the northern coast and in the highlands (sierra) until Thursday, October 29. Heavy to extreme rainfall is expected in the highlands, while similar intensity is anticipated along the northern coast—particularly in Tumbes and the inland coastal areas of Piura.

For Tuesday, October 27, the meteorological agency forecast rainfall totals ranging from 3 to 20 millimeters per day along the northern coast, and between 11 and 29 millimeters per day in the northern highlands. In the southern highlands, projected rainfall amounts range from 7 to 15 millimeters per day.

The precipitation will be accompanied by lightning and wind gusts reaching speeds of around 40 kilometers per hour. Additionally, snowfall is expected in areas of the southern highlands located above 3,900 meters above sea level.

Rainfall also reported in the Piura highlands

The precipitation has also reached locations in the Piura highlands. In Ayabaca, the Sapillica weather station recorded a total of 9 millimeters, while in Huancabamba, the Canchaque station recorded 8.4 millimeters.

Given the forecast that the rain will continue, the public is advised to stay informed through official channels and to follow the instructions provided by the authorities—especially in areas vulnerable to flooding, the sudden activation of dry riverbeds (quebradas), and other hazards associated with heavy rainfall.
