U.S. remains primary destination for Peruvian agricultural exports

Peruvian (traditional and non-traditional) agricultural exports amounted to US$1.736 billion in the first two-month period of this year, up 30% compared to the same period in 2021, with the United States (USA) being the leading market for them, the Association of Peruvian Exporters (Adex) reported on Sunday.

According to Susana Yturry, the manager of ADEX's Agroexports, the signing of trade agreements was fundamental for the evolution of these sales, particularly of value-added exports, as well as the efforts made by the National Agricultural Sanitation Service (Senasa) to lift sanitary and phytosanitary restrictions.

Yturry stated that companies must also develop commercial strategies to reach more international buyers, noting their participation in trade missions to Chile, Spain, and Mexico, as well as at fairs such as Thaifex (Thailand), Biofach (Germany) and Expoalimentaria in Peru.

"Expoalimentaria is the most important trade platform in Latin America. At this fair, exhibitors will have the opportunity to close deals, expand their network of contacts, and update their knowledge on important issues related to the supply chain of food and beverages, machinery, containers and packaging, technology, and services for foreign trade," she emphasized.

The Expoalimentaria fair will take place from September 21 to 23 at Jockey Club Exhibition Center.

Traditional agriculture

According to the Adex Data Trade Business Intelligence System, in the first two-month period of 2022, traditional exports (US$258.930 million) accounted for 14.9% of total agricultural exports and saw an increase of 362.4%.

"Coffee, whose sales totaled US$248.555 million, represented 95.9% of the total and posted a growth of 460.6%. Other cane sugar varieties took second place," she added.

The U.S. (US$60.017 million) stood out as the main market for traditional agricultural exports, accounting for 23.1% of the total and achieving growth of 495.6%), followed by Germany (US$55.063 million), which represented 21.2% of total sales and saw an increase of 511.6%.

The list also includes Belgium, Colombia, Sweden, France, Italy, Canada, the United Kingdom, and South Korea.
