Rail transport services on the Hidroeléctrica–Machu Picchu Pueblo route resumed today following the removal of rocks and debris that had slid onto a section of the track early last Monday.
Perú Rail, which provides both local and tourist train services, confirmed that it received authorization to resume operations from Ferrocarril Trasandino S.A., the company responsible for maintenance.
“The ‘Tren Local’ (Local Train) and ‘Perú Rail Expedition’ services will operate according to their regular schedules,” the company stated in a press release.
Meanwhile, Ferrocarril Trasandino S.A. confirmed that the reopening follows the cleanup and restoration of the track at kilometer 111+800—the site affected by the rockfall—and stated that “operational safety in the restored section is now guaranteed.”
The rockfall also affected the Hiram Bingham Highway, which connects Machu Picchu Pueblo to the Inca Citadel of Machu Picchu; fortunately, the road was cleared that same morning, just in time for the arrival of a large number of tourists.
The Municipality of Machu Picchu, along with other authorities and the private sector, facilitated the cleanup efforts by deploying heavy machinery.
Train services are now running normally, adhering to established schedules on the Ollantaytambo–Machu Picchu Pueblo route (and vice versa). Cusco is currently experiencing favorable weather, with partially cloudy skies and clear conditions in some areas.
