Swedish Ambassador to Peru Maria Cramér on Wednesday explained that the closure of the Embassy headquarters in Lima —scheduled for the second half of 2022— is due to a normal process of adaptation of the Swedish Foreign Service, noting that Peru will continue to be a valued partner.

In a tweet posted on its official Twitter account, the diplomat clarified the "false rumors" circulating on social media about the reasons for the Swedish Embassy's closure.

The envoy recalled that on November 3, 2021, the Swedish Government announced the closure of its headquarters in Lima for next year.

On that occasion, a statement reported that the measure responded to the need for continuous adaptation of the Swedish Foreign Service to external changes, the budgetary situation, as well as new demands and needs.

All this is intended to create the best conditions to pursue its foreign policy and promote Swedish interests abroad.

"This evaluation process is carried out constantly and involves the opening or closure of diplomatic missions around the world," reads the communiqué.

Likewise, Sweden indicated that it maintains very good relations with Peru, both with its Government, as well as with other actors and partners. Furthermore, it expressed its wish to continue developing and strengthening these relations under new modalities.

In this sense, it communicated its intention to renew the Peru-Sweden Roadmap signed by both Governments in 2016 to reflect this aspiration.

Finally, it was reported that the Swedish Embassy in Santiago de Chile will be concurrent to Peru and will be responsible for the consular activities.

Additionally, Sweden plans to establish an Honorary Consulate in Lima, in addition to the one being established in Cusco.
