A series of remote archaeological sites and cultural landscapes in the Andean regions of Ayacucho and Cajamarca have been declared National Cultural Heritage by Peru’s National Institute of Culture (INC).
Some of the national cultural treasures in Ayacucho include Huamanillo, Jasapata, Wachwaycerca and Kulluma in the Lucanas province as well as Ñawpa Llanta 1 and 2, Cutu Cutu, Ituni, Tucu Tucu and Marca Marca in the Huanca Sancos province.
Ayacucho also features the archaeological sites of Briapampa, Calvariopata, Ñawpallaqta in the Parinacochas province as well as Qoriwayrachina, Wachwalla and Iglesiachayuq in the Sucre province.
In addition, cultural landscapes declared National Cultural Heritage in Ayacucho include Cruz Pata, Qoccqa - Pukaraqay, Paqllawi - Saramarca and Qonani or Huayllacha in Sucre and Multicorral, Pachata, Tallapukro, Waquirata I and Waswalaca in Lucanas.
Regarding the Andean region of Cajamarca, 780km north of the capital Lima, the INC declared the archaeological site of Las Varas in the Contumazá province as a national cultural heritage.
From now and on, any hotel, road, highway, mining or agricultural project that might alter the landscape near these sites must have prior approval from INC.
