stated on Tuesday that the Government will take all necessary measures to tackle crime, regardless of whether Congress grants the legislative powers it has requested.
"The request for legislative powers has been submitted to Congress. Four weeks have passed, and so far, nothing has happened. They are testing our patience, but we hope to receive positive news today," Fujimori said.
The Head of State underscored that the issue of legislative powers "is not about the Government, but about the measures that will be taken to better combat crime."
In this regard, she recalled that Prime Minister Luis Galarreta had said that republican patience was being tested, which means upholding the institutional framework and respecting democracy and its rules without this implying weakness.
"We will be attentive to Congress' decision today and expect it to meet the challenges facing the country," Fujimori stated.
"We will take all necessary measures to tackle this scourge, whether or not legislative powers are granted to us, within the democratic framework. The only blow to be struck will be against organized crime," she added.
President Fujimori made these remarks during the inauguration of riverbank protection works along the Chico and Matagente rivers in Chincha.
The top official emphasized that the Government has been working since its first day in office to clear riverbeds and strengthen riverbank defenses in preparation for El Niño phenomenon.
The Head of State recalled that previous administrations had not carried out preventive works.
Nonetheless, she noted that her Government is committed to providing solutions and taking responsibility in the face of the emergency.
