President Vizcarra: Life, health, and well-being of Peruvians 'the only flag'

The life, health, and well-being of all Peruvians constitute ‘the only flag,’ said Peruvian President Martin Vizcarra Sunday during a ceremony that marked the 140th Anniversary of the Battle of Arica and renewed the Oath of Allegiance to the National Flag.

"The defense of life and health has no political color; it is a fight that involves us all. Today the only flag is the flag of life, health, and well-being of all Peruvians," he expressed.

According to the Head of State, almost a century and a half after the Battle of Arica, Peruvians face a new threat, different from that of the past, an invisible enemy that causes pain, anxiety, and uncertainty in many homes.

The top official noted that this new threat has tested Peruvians' character and mettle to fight against adversity and their ability to function as a united society that moves in one direction to achieve the goal of defeating the coronavirus (COVID-19) disease.

"Today, fate requires us —just like it did to brave Peruvians at Morro de Arica (Hill of Arica)— to choose between giving up in the face of discouragement (…) or showing responsibility so as to defeat this new enemy together," he said.

Mr. Vizcarra affirmed that his Government will continue to work towards this goal hand-in-hand with health professionals who are on the front line of the battle, as well as with Armed Forces, National Police, firefighters, cleaning personnel, farmers, drivers, and citizens.

Economic reopening

In addition, he emphasized that the gradual resumption of economic activities has been implemented without lowering the country's guard in the fight against this pandemic.

This reopening will help generate employment, resume large scale infrastructure works, improve public and private investment, as well  as create opportunities for Peruvians.
