16:00 | Arequipa (Arequipa region), May. 17.

The President of the Republic Dina Boluarte on Friday underscored that Peru will receive the 21 leaders of APEC members in November, amid an economy in clear reactivation process, which registered a 1.38% growth in the first quarter of 2024.

The top official participated in the closing ceremony of the Joint Meeting of Ministers Responsible for Women and Ministers Responsible for Trade. It took place within the framework of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum held in Arequipa, southern Peru.

"Peru is at a crucial moment in its economic development; collaboration with our APEC counterparts is essential to ensure sustainable growth," Mrs. Boluarte expressed.

"The momentum of national economy and agreements with APEC partner economies have a clear objective: the well-being of our citizens," she added.

The Head of State affirmed it is the goal, noting that the 21 member economies work jointly towards this end.

In this regard, Mrs. Boluarte mentioned that the APEC 2024 forum —expected to bring together in Lima leaders from member economies— will be a great opportunity to promote constructive and fruitful dialogue.

"Similarly, it will serve as the stage to foster an ambitious agenda focused on sustainable growth, innovation, and digitalization," she asserted.

The Head of State mentioned that in November —within the framework of the APEC Summit— the inauguration of the Chancay Megaport is scheduled —a project that will mark a before and after in the country's development history as it will turn Peru into the first logistics hub of the South American Pacific.

"We say 'welcome' to Asia-Pacific economies; Peru welcomes you and will always welcome you with open arms to continue working in unity," she said.

Landmark for Women

"I want to announce an important news: the Joint Statement of APEC Women and Trade Ministers has just been approved. This is a milestone for women in the 35 years of (APEC's) existence," she underlined.

According to Mrs. Boluarte, "it also expresses the commitment to ensuring gender equality and equitable access to economic opportunities for everyone across the Asia-Pacific region."

She said that, while gaps persist that limit women's empowerment, the APEC forum will continue to advance towards that goal in order to fulfill the wish of building more egalitarian societies, free from violence and stereotypes, where female citizens can exercise their economic rights.

Lastly, she argued that the inclusion of women in the economy is not only a matter of social justice but also a smart strategy to foster economic development.
