Photo Gallery: A look back at Lima of yesteryear on its 484th anniversary

Known as "The City of Kings," Peru's capital city Lima was founded on 18 January, 1535. So, thousands prepare to mark the 484th anniversary of its Spanish foundation on Friday.

The photo gallery below gives a glimpse of some remarkable moments in the history of this big metropolis and its inhabitants. 

Those above 40 years old know that Yola Polastri was the undisputed "TV girl" in the 1970s and that she filled stadiums in the 1980s.


Monterrey Chain reigned over the Lima market since 1954 but did not make it to the new millennium.


In the 1970s, fountains in the capital city used to be a refreshing public space, mainly for children.


Ondas del Corazon (Heart Waves). Radio dramas were a huge success on the radio.


Boys played "canga," "lingo," and with the spinning top, while girls jumped rope. At that time, a rope was just enough to have fun.


Opened in 1914 at San Martin Square, Colon Theater was one of the favorites among Lima's residents. 


Cachascan (freestyle wrestling) events —a mix of masks, boots, and holds— drew crowds both at Luna Park and in several Lima neighborhoods.


In the late 1960s, nobody missed a chapter of Simplemente Maria (Simply Mary), a Peruvian soap opera featuring Saby Kamalich and Mariela Trejos.

 
Lima citizens and Peruvians, in general, used to fly on Faucett airlines. 


Many children followed Juan Andres Salim on his show Buenas Tardes, Tio Johnny (Good Afternoon, Uncle Jhonny) aired by America Television local channel.


The Lord of Miracles pilgrimage grew more and more. Thousands of devotees filled the streets in procession from the chapel to the church of Las Nazarenas.


Chincha-born Reynaldo Nonone served as a traffic police officer in downtown Lima. For more than two decades, he was the symbol of an honest, courteous, and incorruptible officer. 


In the 1950s, the streetcar carried locals from the then-aristocratic Dos de Mayo roundabout to Callao.
