The Poverty reduction policy, implemented by Peru's current administration, is not only based on financial resources, but also on social aspects, Development and Social Inclusion Minister Paola Bustamante stressed.

While discussing the Human Development Report for Latin America & the Caribbean issued by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), she noted the approach "is multidimensional," taking into account factors such as vulnerability of certain social segments, as well as inequality and discrimination.

Likewise, the approach on poverty has contributed to reducing childhood malnutrition levels. In this sense, Peru ranks among the world's top countries.

"We have made progress on extreme poverty reduction. The target was set at 5%, and Peru currently stands at 4% [...],” she pointed out.

"The number of people with access to drinking water was doubled from two to four million," she added.

Concerning suggestions by UNDP on strengthening certain sectors —for poverty reduction progress not to go backwards— Bustamante addressed Government’s support provided to social protection systems.

"We, satisfactorily, agree with this study. These systems will help revert an economic deceleration situation that could put at risk over one million Peruvians, who left poverty behind," the minister said.
