The President of the Republic Petro Castillo congratulated Gustavo Petro, who has won a runoff election to become Colombia's next president.

The Head of State noted that he and Petro are united by a common feeling that seeks improved collective, social, and regional integration for their peoples.

"I just called Gustavo Petro to congratulate him on his historic democratic victory in Colombia. We are united by a common feeling that seeks improved collective, social, and regional integration for our peoples," he said.

"You can always count on the support of Peru," he wrote on Twitter.

Petro, of the Historic Pact coalition, prevailed over the independent populist candidate Rodolfo Hernandez, of the Anti-Corruption Rulers' League party, and will become the first leftist president of Colombia.

With 99.45% of the polling stations informed, Petro —former mayor of Bogota— obtained 11,248,779 votes, representing 50.48% of the vote, while his rival got 10,532,578 votes (47.26%), according to Colombia's National Registry.
