The Peruvian Football Federation (FPF) broke ties with Jorge Fossati, who will no longer be coach of the Peruvian national team due to poor results obtained so far in the 2026 World Cup Qualifiers.
The news that shook Peruvian football on Wednesday was when it was announced that the highest body of Peruvian football had decided to unilaterally terminate the contract of Uruguayan Jorge Fossati.
"It's over. It was learned that the Peruvian Football Federation (FPF) decided to break ties with the Peruvian national team coach, Jorge Fossati. After the meeting of the FPF Board of Directors, it was decided that the Uruguayan will not continue in charge of the Bicolor (red and white), due to the results obtained during his process," RPP published on its news portal.
Jorge Fossati was appointed coach of the Peruvian national team after the departure of Juan Reynoso. Under his charge, the Bicolor played 13 games, including friendlies, Copa América and Qualifiers, of which it won four matches, drew four and lost five.
Reasons for his departure
Peru is located in last place in the table of positions of the 2026 World Cup Qualifiers, with only 7 points out of 36 played in the twelve game dates.
Despite the fact that coach Jorge Fossati is not the only one responsible for this critical moment - the Uruguayan strategist replaced Juan Reynoso in 2023, who started the current qualifying process with also poor results - the fans believe that he lacked the pulse to make the necessary corrections.
Added to that, he did not know how to build anything new and bet on the same elements for 8 years. This can be seen in the latest results that led the Blanquirroja (red and white) to return to last place.
The best result he achieved, so far, with the Bicolor was to beat (1-0) Uruguay in Lima that allowed him to leave the last place in the table, a position to which he returned after falling 1-0 to Argentina in La Bombonera stadium in Buenos Aires.
The 71-year-old strategist has still a contract with the FPF until October 2025. According to reports, he earns 166 thousand dollars monthly on average, but if he completes his entire contract he would receive approximately 3.5 million dollars.
