Permanent Representative of Peru to the International Organizations in Geneva, Switzerland,
Ambassador Ana Cecilia Gervasi, has presented her credential letters to top authorities at the
World Trade Organization (WTO), the UN Office in Geneva, and the President of the Conference on Disarmament.
At the meeting, Ambassador Gervasi reiterated the invitation to the WTO Director-General to officially visit Peru and participate in the first Joint Meeting of Ministers Responsible for Trade and Ministers for Women, which will take place in the Peruvian city of Arequipa on May 16-17 this year.
For her part, Okonjo-Iweala thanked the Peruvian senior representative for t
he constructive role that the country has always played at the WTO and the leadership shown by being
the first Latin American member to ratify the Agreement on Fisheries Subsidies.
Likewise, the two authorities agreed on the need to achieve concrete results at the upcoming WTO Ministerial Conference that will take place in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, at the end of February, particularly in the second phase of negotiations on fisheries subsidies, which seeks to combat over-fishing and over-capacity.

Within the framework of her presentation before the Director-General of the United Nations Office in Geneva, Tatiana Valovaya, Ambassador Gervasi reiterated Peru's firm commitment to multilateralism and international law, expressing support for the priorities of this global organization's office.
Meanwhile, Director-General Valovaya highlighted the important role of Peru in favor of international peace and security, as well as the country's potential to become an example of sustainable development, as it has the necessary elements.
Additionally, she emphasized that such concept was promoted for the first time at a multilateral level by former UN Secretary General Javier Perez de Cuellar.
During the meeting, both senior authorities agreed on the importance of empowerment of women in different spheres.
Furthermore, the Director-General of the UN Office in Geneva invited Peru to participate in an exhibition entitled "Not a Woman's Job?" promoted by her office with the aim of raising awareness about the need to overcome prejudices and encourage equality of job opportunities.
