The Ministry of Education of Peru (Minedu, by its Spanish acronym), within the framework of World Book Day, pays tribute to Peru's Indigenous languages with the publication of a bilingual teaching text in the Ticuna language.
A total of 1,500 copies will be distributed in communities located in the eastern part of the country.
The text “Enseñanzas ticuna-magütá de la abuela Dorisa” (Ticuna-Magütá Teachings of Grandma Dorisa), created with the support of the French Institute of Andean Studies, began to be distributed in the communities of Cushillococha, Santa Clara, San José de Yanayaco, Galilea, and others with Ticuna presence and intercultural bilingual education.
The publication collects songs, riddles, and teachings in the Ticuna language with which mothers, teachers, and grandmothers educate and care for small children.
The grandmother and Magütá teacher Dorisa Guerrero preserved the lessons in notebooks and notes.
In order to preserve them, the linguist Alejandro Prieto compiled and transcribed 20 songs and 30 riddles, illustrated and hand-painted by Ticuna artist William Ahué, in a special edition by Minedu and Aguajito Ediciones.
The bilingual text, which has hand-made illustrations, is being distributed in intercultural educational institutions located in the tri-border area of Peru-Colombia-Brazil.
Through this work, students will be encouraged to participate in activities involving drawing, singing, and planting of plants and trees. In this way, schoolchildren will experience a creative and artistic journey that integrates reading, art, and nature.
Meanwhile, teachers will be trained in strategies to connect the book and reading with the students.
Additionally, in the context of Earth Day and Book Day, students are invited to take part in the collective workshop “Through Children’s Eyes: Let’s Celebrate Biodiversity with the Fruits of the Earth, Words, and Books.”
