Peruvian agricultural sector grows 4% in the first quarter of 2025

Olives, mangoes, grapes, paprika, oil palm, and sweetcorn registered the greatest growth

The Peruvian agricultural sector registered 4% growth in the first quarter of this year (January-February-March), compared to the same period in 2024, according to the Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation (Midagri).

The increase in the agricultural sector was driven by a +4.7% increase in the agricultural subsector and a +3% increase in the livestock subsector.

The main products that increased their production in the first quarter were: olives (+252% in Tacna, Ica, and Arequipa); Mango production increased by 175% (in Piura, Ancash, and Lambayeque); grape production increased by 42.0% (in Ica, Lima, and Piura); paprika production increased by 14.2% (an advance in Arequipa), among others.

Also notable were the following crops: oil palm production increased by 10.6% (in Ucayali, Huánuco, and San Martín); sweetcorn production increased by 8.1% (in Cusco, Ayacucho, and Amazonas); sugarcane production increased by 7.0% (in La Libertad, Lima, and Ancash); parchment coffee production increased by 4.8% (in San Martín, Junín, and Huánuco), among others.

Likewise, during this period, the livestock subsector registered increased chicken production, which increased by 3.0% (mainly due to increased sales in Lima, La Libertad, and Arequipa); raw cow's milk production increased by 4.2% (mainly in Arequipa, La Libertad, and Puno); and pork production increased by 1.8%. +3.7% (higher production in Lima and Ica) and beef +0.9% (higher production in Puno).

On the other hand, the agricultural sector registered growth of 3.3% in March.

The agricultural subsector achieved a 3.6% growing. The main products that increased their monthly production were: olives +252% (in Tacna); artichokes +138% (in Lima); grapes by 127% (in Ica and Lima); sugarcane +16.9% (in Lima, La Libertad, and Ancash).

Also, palm oil +15.8% (in Ucayali and San Martín) due to favorable weather conditions; parchment coffee +9.5% (in San Martín); avocado +8.4% (in Ancash, Lima, and Lambayeque); and increased harvested area of paddy rice +4.1% (in Arequipa and San Martín), among others.

Furthermore, livestock production increased by 2.9% that month compared to the same month last year.

This result is largely due to higher chicken production, which increased by 3.5% (in Lima, La Libertad, and Ica); raw cow's milk by 4.1% (in Puno, Arequipa, and Lima); pork by 3.6% (in Lima and Ica), and beef by 1.6% (mainly in Huánuco).
