The President of the Republic, Jose Jeri, stated that the Government will assess measures to strengthen public security through on-site supervision of Peruvian borders, in order to prevent undocumented foreign nationals from entering and posing a risk.

"Much of the insecurity we experience today is precisely due to not having properly attended to and secured our borders. Therefore, there must be an authority overseeing to ensure that everything functions properly," he said after participating in the national flag-raising and national anthem-singing ceremony at the Main Square in Lima's Lurigancho-Chosica district on Sunday.

The Head of State was emphatic in stating that oversight tasks, simple as they may seem, have not been carried out. Thus, he will be promptly visiting the border areas.

At another point, the top official stated that results are being achieved in the declared war against crime, although they are not yet fully satisfactory.

Therefore, greater efforts will be devoted to using the new tools that would become available if Congress approves the requested legislative powers.

"We are pleased with the progress we have been making, although not 100%. Things can always be better, and they will be, but there are firm actions we have taken as an administration—not only declaring Lima and Callao in a state of emergency, but also measures that go hand in hand with it, such as the legislative powers," he said.

The top official stated that the aim is to restore public confidence through strategic, concrete, and lasting actions. He added that the entire Ministerial Cabinet will continue working on this issue.

"One cannot let their guard down for even a second in this fight against crime. There have been occasions when, while addressing other equally important matters, we have not been present in some strategic actions. One of the reflections I have to make is to give more of my time—beyond what we are already giving—in order to focus and generate more results. It's not that there are none; there are, but they are not enough. We are working on that," he pointed out.

Response to criticism

Regarding the questions raised about some of the Executive Branch's measures, such as the promotion of civic values, the President said that the national anthem singing was stipulated to reaffirm the country's commitment—not only of public servants, but also of children and adolescents.

"The important thing here is to move forward, with authorities and civil society working together, always committed to the future that lies in children and young people, who must reaffirm their love for the homeland," Jeri noted.

"We will not only make changes in the present, but we will also secure the future. We are the transition toward the future, and that is the legacy we want to leave for 2026," he stated.

As for the controversial proposal to criminalize the disclosure of classified information by public officials, the Head of State made it clear that this will not restrict press freedom.

"We are trying to safeguard information that is reserved and classified. We are currently working with intelligence and sensitive data. If an official leaks information about an operation we will carry out, during my intervention in a bunker, there will be no one because they will have escaped. This proposal is designed for such contexts. Therefore, the press will be invited to give their opinion so that the true purpose of this law is fulfilled," he concluded.
