The President of the Republic Dina Boluarte on Wednesday affirmed that justice and development for the peoples can only be built in democracy, and reaffirmed Peru's commitment to supporting the initiative to create an international coalition to defend and strengthen the democratic system.

"It is our duty to defend and reinforce it, promoting dialogue, guaranteeing respect for human rights and better living conditions for all," Mrs. Boluarte said at the Summit for Democracy 2023, in which she participated at the invitation of United States counterpart, Joseph Biden.

While stressing that in three months in office the Government has been working to strengthen the institutional framework and meet Peruvians' needs and demands, the top official reminded participants that democracy must generate concrete results for the sake of the population.

According to the President, it must guarantee free and transparent elections; respect for liberties; (high) quality health and education; potable water; highways; bridges; rural roads; and safety.

In this regard, Mrs. Boluarte said the Executive Branch has launched Con Punche Peru program so as to reactivate the economy supported by social and productive investments that reach directly household economy in every region.

Likewise, the dignitary expressed conviction that consensus constitutes a central element of democracy. Thus, her administration promotes a broad and inclusive dialogue —with political forces, as well as with social organizations and productive sectors.

Said process —she underlined— is carried out on the basis of the great objectives that Peru has —above any ideological or political differences.

Similarly, the Head of State affirmed that the promotion and defense of human rights constitutes another fundamental pillar —of both the democratic system and the strengthening of governability.

In this sense, Mrs. Boluarte said the Government respects and will continue to respect Peru's international commitments in terms of human rights, including the right to legitimate and peaceful protest —differentiating it from violent acts against the democratic order and the rule of law.
